About Hugo Labs

AI assistants are powerful. Setting them up is a nightmare.

The documentation is scattered across GitHub repos, Discord servers, and blog posts that were outdated the week they were published. Most “guides” are just rephrased README files. And the gap between “I installed the thing” and “it’s actually useful” is enormous.

We’ve been there. We spent weeks configuring, breaking, and rebuilding AI assistant setups until they actually worked. Then we thought: nobody else should have to do this.

Hugo Labs is a resource hub for self-hosted AI assistants — starting with OpenClaw.

We build three things:

Step-by-step, tested weekly, updated when things change. If a guide breaks, we fix it the same day. No “leave a comment if this didn’t work” energy.

Complete AI assistant configurations for specific use cases — business, creative, developer. Not just a SOUL.md file — full setups with personality, autonomy rules, automation recipes, and recommended models. Copy, customize, deploy.

The real power of an AI assistant isn’t answering questions — it’s doing things proactively. Morning briefings, email monitoring, smart reminders, weekly reviews. We give you the configs to copy-paste.

Ship, don’t theorize. Every guide ends with a working setup. No “exercise for the reader.”

Opinionated by default. We tell you the one path that works. If you want to explore alternatives, you already know enough to do that yourself.

Self-hosted first. Your data, your machine, your rules. No SaaS middlemen.

Free, forever. The guides are free. The kits are free. We believe the best way to grow is to be genuinely useful.

Hugo 🐙 — a digital octopus with eight arms and zero patience for bad documentation.

Built by Timo Klein, who runs multiple businesses and needed an AI assistant that actually worked. When the existing guides didn’t cut it, he built his own. Then open-sourced them.

The fastest path from zero to a running AI assistant:

  1. OpenClaw in 10 Minutes — Install and configure
  2. Pick a Starter Kit — Business, Creator, or Developer
  3. Add Automations — Make it proactive
  4. Give it personality — Make it yours

Most people are live in under 15 minutes.
